HoverNews is a free standalone news grabbing application that is based off of the plug-in of the same name for HoverDesk. It is designed to work with custom backend files, RSS and RDF feeds as well as parsing the HTML of any website. HoverNews will scroll the headlines from your favorite website so that you can be kept abreast of a variety of news. Some of the websites that HoverNews works with are DeviantART, CNN, ABCNews, Slashdot, kuro5hin and more.
